Hull’s former Customs House, better known to many locals as The Neptune Inn is to open it’s doors to the public as part of the National Heritage Days in the UK. The building, build in the 1700’s by George Pycock, has played host to such names as Robert D’Onston Stephenson, and in earlier years Lewis Carroll’s grandfather! The building has a long history, and rarely opens its doors, so visitors are in for a treat. The building overlooks Parliament-street, where Robert D’Onston Stephenson’s cousin Joseph Dawber was a solicitor for many years. Joseph was jailed in the 1890’s for fraud, and actually served time with Frederick Bailey Deeming, who was in jail for fraud at a jewellery store on Whitefriargate that the Customs House stands on!
