For three years I have searched both documentation and with maps and plans of the Hull Cemeteries to try and locate Richard and Isabella Stephenson. I poured over the East Yorkshire Family History Societies grave transcription books, parish records at East Riding Archives, and through the family history records at Hull’s Carnegie Heritage Centre, Hull’s History Centre, and through the mass of documentation in the Local Studies and Archives. Finally, after three years, I found a card entry in Hull’s History Centre that featured the death of Isabella Stephenson in the second quarter of 1891. The card had the basics of her death, the quarter it was recorded, the date etc, but nothing of real importance, at least so I thought. That was until I noticed that on the rear of some of the cards, the transcriptions of grave stones had been added! I once again found Isabella Stephenson’s card and turned it over, to reveal the following information.

In Memory of William Stephenson who died Jan 31st 1858 aged 84 years and of
Mary Ann, wife of the Rev. George Gladstone, who died Oct 4th 1867 aged 59 years,
Also of Ann Lambert, who died August 8th 1872 aged 82 years,
Also of Richard Stephenson, who died January 4th 1889, aged 83 years,
Also of Isabella, wife of the above Richard Stephenson, who died April 19th 1891, aged 81 years.

Finally I had located the transcription, but just who was William, Mary Ann and Ann Lambert and why where they buried with the bodies of Richard and Isabella Stephenson? Here is the story of the Stephenson family grave.

In 1806 Richard Stephenson was born, and later Christened on September 12th at Hull’s Holy Trinity Church, a location that boasts the beautifully carved coralloid marble font which is still used to this day. The font is said to date from around 1380 and notable MP William Wilberforce was baptized here. The parish records state that Richard was born on July 28th 1806 to William and Ann Stephenson. [1] From this it appears that William Stephenson is Richard Stephenson’s father, and therefore Robert D’Onston Stephenson’s grandfather.
By May 1831 Richard Stephenson had met and married Isabella Dawber at St Mary’s Church, in the parish of Sculcoates. The marriage was witnessed by Robert Dawber and an M.A. Stephenson. The fact that M. A Stephenson was present at the wedding as a witness has caused problems for myself for sometime. Why wasn’t William a witness at the wedding, and who was M. A. Stephenson?
The subsequent newspaper report of the marriage failed to mention any witnesses [3] and the trial seemed to be going cold.
Searches for an M.A. Stephenson failed to throw any light on the mystery, but with the discovery of the grave transcription efforts were moved from the Stephenson’s onto the name of Gladstone. It was with this surname and the name of George that the marriage entry was found on Yorkshire BMD for George Gladstone marrying Mary Ann Stephenson in 1843 at Holy Trinity Church in Hull.[4] With this new found data I searched the newspapers again, and found the following on April 28th 1843,

Marriages

At the Holy Trinity Church, Mr. George Gladstone, corn merchant, Sleaford to Mary Anne, only daughter of William Stephenson of this place. [5]

M.A. Stephenson was not a man, as I had initially thought, but Mary Ann Stephenson, the only daughter of William Stephenson, and sister to Richard Stephenson, thus making her Robert D’Onston Stephenson’s auntie!
On January 31st 1858 William Stephenson passed away at his property on Norfolk-street aged 84. [6] The news was quickly covered in the press, both locally, [7] and nationally [8].
In 1867 more bad news would hit the family, when Mary Ann passed away, a newspaper entry read,

Deaths

October 4, at Leiston, Suffolk, Mary Ann, wife of the Rev. G. Gladstone, and only daughter of the late Mr. Wm, Stephenson, of this town. [9]

Again we see Mary Ann linked to William Stephenson of Hull and listed as his only daughter.
With the mystery of Mary Ann, and William solved, it was time to turn my attention to Ann Lambert, who had passed away in 1872. Sadly, no newspaper entry for Lambert could be found, and no register of her death has yet to be traced, but it will be found. The only clue that can be found at present, is that Ann Lambert was a friend, possibly even a relative of the family, as she was seen as a visitor in the 1861 census. [10]
And so, as a busy week of research ends, another begins, there are still as many unanswered questions as there are answers, and there is still a grave to be found and photographed somewhere in a damp overgrown Hull Cemetery.

It has been a week of newspaper research and some great finds have been discovered especially on Frederick Bailey Deeming.

Over the past few days I have uncovered,

30 International Newspaper reports on Deeming’s bancruptcy trial in Australia in 1887 

30 International Newspaper reports on Deeming’s trial for fraud in Australia in 1887-1888

12 National Newspaper reports on Deeming’s trial for fraud in Hull in 1890

45 Newspaper reports looking into the Hedon/Preston tragedy, some of which look at Deeming as being the assailant

It’s not all Deeming though.  Over the course of the week I have also uncovered

12 National Newspaper reports on James and Florence Maybrick.

40 National Newspaper reports on the Baccarat Scandal.

40 National Newspaper reports on the Cleveland-street Scandal.

This week I have also taken delivery of 7 books that feature Robert D’Onston Stephenson, or in one case Stevenson, and each looks at his life and connection to the murders.

Hull History Centre 

Yesterday I managed to track down several previously unseen reports dating back to the 1890’s regarding Frederick Bailey Deeming.  I had previously found the reports relating to Deeming’s fraud trial in Hull in September 1890 and had heard there were other reports from this period, but sadly these could not be traced. 

I did, however; find over 50 new reports from the Hull Daily Mail dating from April and May 1892 and covering the trial of Frederick Bailey Deeming.  Many of these reports offered new insights into the criminal life of Deeming, and some offered the local slant on events.  Many of the reports came from former Governor of Hull Gaol, Harry Webster, who was in Australia during the trial and who had Deeming, alias Lawson, under is charge at Hull Gaol for the frauds he committed on a Hull Jeweller.

 East Riding Archives

Tomorrow I hope to visit the East Riding Archives and St Mary’s Church in Beverley.  The archives hold all the parish registers for Beverley and I am hoping to obtain the wedding entries for Deeming, under the alias Lawson, and Nellie Matheson. 

Whilst there I also aim to visit St Mary’s Church, a location associated with Frederick Bailey Deeming and Lewis Carroll, a suspect proposed by Richard Wallace in his book Jack the Ripper- Light Hearted Friend.

Despite numerous articles and texts alluding to the frauds carried out in Hull by Frederick Bailey Deeming, very few newspaper accounts have surfaced, with only one exception which stated that Deeming had been given 9 months for his criminal deeds. 

I managed to track down the Calender of Prisoners for 1890, and the Michaelmas Quarter Sessions on the case, but they did not run to much, and contained very little useful information. 

With this in mind, and a new wind, I once again trawled the Hull Press for the year 1890 and sure enough, I discovered several newspaper reports covering Deemings criminal activities in Hull, and the chase that the Hull Detectives gave across the globe. 

More interestingly, I uncovered an article written by Detective Grassby, the man responsible for capturing Deeming in Monte-Video, and bringing him back to Hull.  Grassby’s article was a great find, as it contained many hiterto unknown details about Deeming’s conduct on the journey back to Hull.

The headlines said it all “Hull Ripper Scare,” “Jack the Ripper Scare in Hull,” and “Jack the Stabber at large.”  These were the reports I discovered this week in several newspapers and covering an incident where 5 women were stabbed.  I managed to trace several different newspapers, giving different views, and some of them featured illustrations of the suspects.  I was also able to ascertain who the culprit was, and managed to obtain birth, marriage and death data.

Hot on the trail I also uncovered the entry in the Calendar Entry of Prisoners, and from this the actual court proceedings of his case!  More info to follow!

The Hull Daily Mail featured the following article on Tuesday March 23rd 2010,

Hull History Centre looks set to beat its target of attracting 30,000 visitors in its first year.

A total of 10,000 people have visited the Worship Street centre in the past six weeks.

The number of schoolchildren using the centre is also beating all expectations.

Managers had hoped 1,500 pupils would visit in the first year.

But already 800 have trawled through the archives.

The 10,000th visitor was Keith Lyon, of Bilton Grange, east Hull, who attended a lunchtime club talk on Jack The Ripper and his connection with Hull.

Mr Lyon said: “I saw the history centre being built and was very keen to get inside and start using it.

“I’m very keen on local history and I’ve been really impressed with what’s on offer here. I’m going to be a regular visitor.”

Martin Taylor, city archivist for Hull City Council, said: “I’d like to pay tribute to the staff here who have dealt with the influx of visitors with professionalism, enthusiasm and good humour.

“Family history is proving the most popular subject for research, but there have been a pleasing number of academic researchers from Britain and overseas.”

His colleague Judy Burg, University of Hull archivist, said: “During the few weeks we have been open I have been struck by the enthusiasm of our visitors.

“Those who are familiar with historical research have appreciated the improved facilities, but it is especially rewarding to see so many coming to the building to investigate archives and local history for the first time.”

The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a grant of £7.7m enabling the centre to be built.

Hull is the first city in the UK to bring together its city and university archives, local studies resources and specialist staff into one building.

 Having the 10,000 visitor at my lecture was something that was discussed, but no one knew whether the target was hit, so it’s nice to see that the 10,000 visitor was recognised, and awarded a commemorative paperweight from Councillor John Robinson.

The first thing you notice with the multi-million pound Hull History Centre is the size, compared to the rooms of the archives, and local studies library it’s enormous. The next thing you notice is how recognisable it is. I approached along High-street, and through the grounds of Hull College, and could see it from some distance away. It might not be tall, but with it’s curved roof, it stands out. I remember my first visit to the City Archives all those years ago, when I could not find the building, and found only a small door with a tiny brass plaque!

The grounds of the history centre are spacious and open, no dark corners, and with plenty of parking spaces and wonderful, if somewhat strange looking trees!

On entering I was met by a familiar face from Hull City Council, who watched over my son during his “Night at the Museum,” at the front desk. From this point you get a feel of how big the building actually is, this isn’t like the small office from the days of the archives, but a grand, well lit, modern area, with seating and views out across the car park to Hull.

I entered the main research area and noted all the books on display, so took a short while to have a look around, spotting new sources of information that I had, until today, never seen before. I poured over a couple of volumes of the Hull City Council/Corporation Minute books before going in search of the trade directories.

I approached the helpdesk and was met by some friendly familiar faces from the old Local Studies Library, and was informed that the trade directories were now kept in the all new search room, which was a room surrounded by glass, and well lit from all sides. To gain access I needed a County Archives Research Network Ticket (CARN) and although I had searched at Hull City Archives, Hull’s Local Studies, East Riding Archives, Carnegie Heritage Centre, Sutton History Centre, Bridlington Archives and Local Studies, I had never been told I needed one. At the East Riding Archives I had been issued with what appears to have been a day ticket, so asked if these were available. Luckily they were, but I would warn other’s who are hoping to view the actual archival arm of the building to take some identification with you such as a driving licence, pension book, benefits book, utility bill, bank statement, cheque guarantee card, family allowance book. As long as you have something recent with your address on.

It took a short while to register, and when I was done I was shown the locker area, with state of the art lockers, and toilets. These were fantastic compared to the lockers and toilets in the old Hull City Archives, and a vast improvement.

I then entered the search area, and looked briefly at the trade directories, and through the enormous name index, noting several sources for the future.

I had a brief walk around, and looked out over the vast array of computers, which, compared to the single computer at Hull’s Local Studies Library is a vast improvement. I also noticed that the number of reader printers had increased, this was another great feature as in the past you had to pre-book to obtain one, and sessions lasted just an hour.

All in all it’s a great place, with loads to keep even the most intrepid of researchers busy. The staff are all knowledgeable, smart, and friendly, and on hand to help. The facilities on offer are a vast improvement on the previous facilities offered in the old archival and historical institutions, and the building is warm, well lit, and in a fantastic location.

It has been a busy couple of days but it is completed!  The massive chapter on Stephenson’s Victorian Ghost Story is finished, with

• Several new sources added, including some previously unseen!
• New information regarding the weather on the night that Stephenson had is alleged encounter.
• New information regarding the location at which his sighting is alleged to have occured.
• Maps, charts and diagrams showing the location, weather patterns etc.
• Primary sources to show whether Stephenson was truthful in his account.
• Sources that Predate Stephenson’s encounter but are the same!
• and much much more!!

You will recall that the Dawber family, from Robert D’Onston Stephenson’s side of the family, were involved in businesses and law in Hull for many years.

The Mayor read a letter from Messrs Tenny and Dawber, of Parliament-street, stating that the directors of these Gardens had agreed to purchase of the late Sir James Walker the whole of the land bounded by the site of the Old Spring Ditch on the south by the Hull Cemetery on the north, the Victoria branch of the North Eastern Railway Company on the east, and by the Bridlington branch of the said railway on the west, and compromising fully two acres of land, for the sum of £1,787, for the purposes of an entrance to the Gardens. As the company had therefore a right of road over the site of the Old Spring Ditch, and would be absolute owners of the land adjoining thereto, and the directors felt that the cost of such would be very serious, they wished to know whether the Corporation would construct such road, provided the directors gave the whole of the land for such purposes.- On the motion of the Mayor, the letter was referred to the Waterworks Committee for consideration.

THE FRAUDS BY A HULL SOLICITOR.- Joseph Dawber (46), solicitor of Hull, surrendered to his bail on charges of appropriating sums of money amounting to £5,600. The first indictment related to £1,400 entrusted to him by the Rev. J. T. Fowler, the Rev. W. Fowler, and Miss Elizabeth Fowler, trustees and executors of the late Joseph Fowler; a second to £2,400 relating to George Alderson Smith, of Scarborough, and a third to £1,000 belonging to Emma Child, or Reading. A fourth indictment charged him with obtaining £8,000 from Jane Downes by means of false pretences.- Prisoner pleaded guilty to one case of misdemeanour,- The sums misapplied amounted to £17,674 altogether.- Mr. Waddy said prisoner had been involved in difficulties through financing unsuccessful building applications.- Seven years penal servitude.

The Summer Assizes for the North and East Ridings division of Yorkshire commenced yesterday at York, before Mr. Justice Day and Mr. Justice Grantham. The only case of interest was one in which a Hull solicitor named Dawber was charged with having converted to his own use various large sums of money intrusted to him by clients for investment. He pleaded guilty to one charge, and it was stated that by his course of swindling since 1886 he had appropriated over £17,000. He was sentenced to seven years penal servitude.
