Thai “Jack the Ripper” to die!

Events, Press Reports No Comments »

You may recall a week or so ago I ran a short piece on the Thai murderer Somkid Phumphuang, who has been dubbed “Jack the Ripper” in Thailand, well here is a follow up report, it appears as though Phumphuang has been sentanced to death for his atrocious crimes!

Somkid Pumpoung, called by the media as “Thailand’s Jack the Ripper” after he allegedly robbed and killed five sex workers, yesterday was sentenced to death for the 2005 murder of a two-month-pregnant traditional Thai massage therapist.

Somkid Phumphuang, called “Jack the Ripper” by the media after he allegedly robbed and killed five sex workers, yesterday was sentenced to death for the 2005 murder of a two-month-pregnant traditional Thai massage therapist.

The Ratchadaphisek Criminal Court said Somkid strangled Pongpan Sapchai in a Lampang hotel room and made off with her valuables worth Bt5,000.

He reportedly confessed but during the trial denied the homicide charge, claiming that police had bullied him.

Somkid, 41, already faces capital punishment for the murder of a Mukdahan cafe singer and life imprisonment for the murder of a traditional masseuse in Buri Ram. This was the third murder case against him.

After the verdict, Somkid criticised the judges, to which the court replied he could appeal. Turning to his attorney to berate him for doing a bad job, Somkid was told by a prosecutor to lower his voice. Somkid told the lawyer rudely to leave him alone and had to dragged away. - The Nation

Fear not, the Victorian Serial Killer isn’t stalking the Lancashire town, but the students of Blackburn College have brought Jack back…for a musical!

 Source: http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/leisure/latest/5023344.Musical_preview__Jack_the_Ripper_in_Blackburn/

STUDENTS from Blackburn College have stepped back in time for their latest musical production of thriller Jack the Ripper.

Based upon the true and compelling story of the 1888 murders in the East End, Blackburn College’s main hall will be transformed into a grim Victorian London for four nights only.

This production will showcase the very best musical talent that Blackburn College has to offer with staff and students’ working tirelessly to ensure the show goes on.

Performed by a cast of 13 drama students, the show links all of the College’s departments together with a cumulative effort from textiles, music, graphic design, production and the marketing departments.

Ian Clinton, Principal at Blackburn College, said: “This is set to be an excellent production and performance and has proven to be a very ‘hands on’ experience for all crew members involved.”

* Jack the Ripper is at Blackburn College from March 2 to 5. For tickets call Student Services on 01254 292929.

I would like to wish the students all the best, break a leg!!

This weeks News…

Archives, Libraries, Research, Stephenson Family No Comments »

Despite having a busy week with meetings and appointments I still managed to get a couple of hours research in at the Hull History Centre.

This week my attention was turned to George Marsh, the man who suspected Robert D’Onston Stephenson of being Jack the Ripper.  Pouring over the census I did find several possible candidates that could well have been the man, and one of these had a long history in the Iron Trade.  George Marsh, at the time of his statement was an out of work Ironmongery salesman.  Despite these finds, work is still ongoing, until I can find definitive proof that this is indeed the George Marsh I am looking for.

Work was also carried out on the Richardson family, this was Robert D’Onston Stephenson’s cousin and her husband.  His cousin and her daughter had accompanied Stephenson on his trip to Flamborough which resulted in him being shot in the leg!

Work was also carried out on Kelburne King, the surgeon who treated Stephenson on more than one occasion.
