Gunthorpe Street c1988

Despite appearances, very little of Gunthorpe Street is Victorian. The building on the left in this Southward view is very, very late Victorian probably 1899/1900 and is was the granite store for the Whitechapel Board of Works. To the right is the playground for the Commercial Street School built in 1903. The first building we see is the Sir Georges Dwellings for Girls built in 1886. And is sometimes mistaken for George Yard Buildings. Why I don’t know as George Yard Buildings was at the North West corner of the street and was demolished around 1970/72.
