The “Health” section of The Times on November 15th contained an article relating to Patricia Cornwell’s theory that painter Walter Sickert was Jack the Ripper, driven to murder by the psychological devastation of botched surgery to correct a childhood fistula of the penis. While the article appears to support Cornwell’s speculation about the psychological effects of such a condition, it is deeply flawed because it accepts at face value Cornwell’s completely unsupported assertion that Sickert had a fistula of the penis.
